Warning

Secure the material stock to the CNC machine by following the CNC manufacturer workholding guidelines.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW CNC MANUFACTURER WORKHOLDING RECOMMENDATIONS CAN LEAD TO DAMAGED PROPERTY, BODILY HARM, OR DEATH.

Verify that the material stock is properly secured by vigorously pushing and pulling against the workpiece in all directions.

Workpiece Anchoring and Indexing With Jigs and Fixtures

Use custom-made jigs and fixtures to securely hold irregularly-shapped workpieces during machining operations. Job cycle times can be improved by performing the same operation on multiple workpieces successively, minimizing machine downtime due to tooling changes, workpiece positioning, and project Z Axis zeroing.

Jig mounted to CNC machine holding workpiece

Pros

  • Provides improved repeatability and precise positioning, quickly
  • Allows for machining multiple parts simultaneously for batch production
  • Can be used to create a repeatable X, Y, and Z Axis project origin point, minimizing losses due to broken bits and machined away zeroing points

Cons

  • Each jig is typically custom to each specific project and may not be suitable for one-off jobs or prototyping work.
  • Additional design time
  • Additional machining time
  • Impacts Z Axis machineable height
  • Additional hardware required
