Warning
Secure the material stock to the CNC machine by following the CNC manufacturer workholding guidelines.
FAILURE TO FOLLOW CNC MANUFACTURER WORKHOLDING RECOMMENDATIONS CAN LEAD TO DAMAGED PROPERTY, BODILY HARM, OR DEATH.
Verify that the material stock is properly secured by vigorously pushing and pulling against the workpiece in all directions.
View the Workholding Guide for examples.
Screw Workpiece Directly to Wasteboard
Predrill screw pilot holes in several places away from the machining area. Secure the workpiece with screws appropriate for the material stock.
Pros
- Provides strong and stable fixation
- Relatively simple and inexpensive
- Only limit is workpiece area
- Can reduce potential tooling collisions when countersunk into the workpiece
- Hardware is readily available
- Can use holes in design to hold down products of CNC operations
- Can provide a repeatable X, Y, and Z Axis project origin point, minimizing losses due to broken bits and machined away zeroing points
Cons
- Bits may break if screws are hit during CNC operations
- Requires drilling into the material, which may not be suitable for all projects
- Requires drilling into the wasteboard
- Not ideal for delicate or fragile materials
- Screw height must be accounted for when measuring the Safe Clearance Height, if the screws are above the material surface
